Pawleys Island Hammocks
An Enduring Design
In 1889, Captain Joshua Ward, a river boat pilot, made the first Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock®. Named for Pawleys Island, one of the oldest and loveliest summer resorts on the South Carolina coast, this cotton rope hammock was originally intended to replace grass-filled mattresses on Captain Ward’s boat. After several unsuccessful tries, the Captain finally came up with a design using wooden spreaders without knots. Little did he know that his own hammock design would endure and grow to become a favorite with hammock lovers around the world.
Today, more than a century later, the oldest rope hammock maker in the world still produces its original hammock. Made with comfort and durability in mind, this hammock is handcrafted of the finest quality rope available -- either 100% natural off-white cotton rope or soft-spun white polyester rope.
Now, however, the product line has expanded to include quilted fabric hammocks as well as a number of hammock accessories. The large quilted fabric hammocks are the essence of comfort. Made of weather-resistant, quilted fabric, they are available in a variety of solid colors or stripes. In addition, the company offers heavy-gauge steel hammock stands, pillows and hammock storage bags.
