Froelich
An 18th-Century Ode
Few periods in history have produced such timeless furniture designs as the 18th century.
To this day, many of that era’s styles, including Chippendale and Queen Anne, are among the
most sought after by discerning furniture buyers around the world. It’s no surprise, then,
that Froelich has built its collections around popular 18th-century designs.
From its home base in Highpoint, North Carolina, Froelich has created an extraordinary
collection of museum-quality furnishings and accessories. The Partner’s Choice collection,
for example, has been reproduced from original drawings. Featured in this elegant selection
of Froelich pieces are delicately carved four-poster beds, pie crust tables, Chippendale
settees, fretback side chairs and armchairs, writing tables, chests and cocktail tables and a
range of accessories, such as butler’s trays and hanging shelves.
Each piece is crafted from Cuban and Dominican Seed Mahogany. Each is carefully carved, sanded,
polished and finished by hand to coax forth the natural glow and grain of the wood. Why those
particular varieties of mahogany? Simple: they are hard, closely-grained mahoganies, and they
most closely resemble the wood used by 18th-century cabinet makers.
In addition, there are a number of pieces from Froelich’s Otto Zenke collection, named so
for a New York-born decorator and designer, whose eye for detail and impeccable taste put
classic Southern style on the map. By updating and adapting 18th-century English classicism
to the 1930s South, Zenke created a new school of style. The Otto Zenke collection is a
paean to this gentleman-craftsman, who designed interiors for many of the South’s most
prosperous families.
